Who is the best cuckoo clock manufacturer? Is there a "best" cuckoo clock brand?
There isn’t one answer to this question, though there are definitely several that have stood out more than others. There is a cuckoo clock of the year contest held every year by the Black Forest clock association and there are often only a handful of competitive clockmakers. Many of them are 5th, 6th and even 7th generation cuckoo clock makers from the Black Forest. Here are a couple of our favorites.
Perhaps I’m a little biased, but I really love the Hones cuckoo clocks! They have some of the most incredible detail and exquisite sound. Located in the Titisee region, they are at the heart of the Black Forest’s best clockmaking. They say “It is our company’s philosophy today as in the past only to use wood carvings and clock cases from regional production and to equip all of our clocks with the highest quality movements.” Like many of the best clockmakers, all of them are hand carved and none are massed produced. This is a huge part of what makes them a quality clockmaker. Wolfgang Trenkle now manages the legacy of Hones cuckoo clocks.
In 1848, in a small farmhouse in Schonach, Anton Schneider began cuckoo clock making. The Schneider family business has now reached the 6th generation and continues the same hand made quality as the first generation. In 1952 they moved to a bigger shop and still remain there today. It is now one of the largest cuckoo clock factories that still hand produces all of the carving. Young woodcarvers are also trained here to continue the family legacy.
Founded in 1894, this company is a 4x winner of the cuckoo clock of the year award and rightly so! All carving is still 100% handmade and even the workbenches are still from the 19th century. Ingolf and Conny Haas, 4th generation family members, now run the shop. They work hard to preserve the timeless quality and maintain the historic work atmosphere. The wall is still made of ceded wooden floors, common during the 19th century and hand craftsmanship is undoubtedly still a key ingredient to their lasting success. Rombach & Haas is responsible for much of the innovative improvements in cuckoo clocks. The first generation promoted the resurfacing of early shield clocks, the second generation, the traditional clocks and now the next generation is contributing to the modern cuckoo clocks. In fact, they are the only company to ever have created a shield clock to win the Clock of the Year award. Rombach and Haas is certainly a cuckoo creator to watch!
This family-run business, located in Schoenwalk, has won the cuckoo clock of the year award 5 times. They are the only company to have won it this many times. Established in 1885 and located in Schoenwald, this clock making factory lies in the heart of the Black Forest’s legacy. They offer innovative designs, which is likely responsible for their numerous wins. Many of their winning chalet cuckoo clock designs include small huts beside the main chalet with incredible detail. I love the story each of their clocks tells.
The quality that is produced from Hubert Herr’s shop is the result of 5 generations hard work! Another long since quality clockmaker, they have also had their moment of glory winning the cuckoo clock of the year. They are also one of the only places that manufacture both the cuckoo clocks and the cuckoo clock movements. They redefined “100% handmade!” They pride themselves on being environmentally conscious while continuing the handmade legacy. Their clocks are made from raw material to finish in just two factories in the Triberg region. They export their clocks to approximately 60 countries worldwide!
6.)Engstler Cuckoo Clocks
Engstler cuckoo clocks is another top manufacturer. They are also located in the Black Forest and proud members of the Black Forest Clock Association. They offer the latest blend of tradition and technology in their mechanical cuckoo clocks, but they also have developed fine quartz and miniature cuckoo clocks. Their shop is also family owned and operated and their pride and joy is the quality and detail that every single Engstler cuckoo clock contains.
